Eigg - The story of a small Scottish island and a big green challenge

A talk by John Hutchison, Chair, Isle of Eigg

Heritage Trust, Thursday 10 December, 6.30 - 8pm

Percival Lecture Theatre, Ambleside Campus, University of Cumbria

Free admission

Eigg, a tiny Hebridean island, is an environmental inspiration. The scenery is amazing. So too are the islanders’ efforts to tackle climate change.

Two years ago, they installed a renewable power system, using a mix of hydroelectric, wind and solar power, to provide all the island’s electricity.

Then last year, Eigg entered a national carbon cutting competition, Nesta’s Big Green Challenge. As one of ten finalists, they have spent the challenge year doing everything they can to shrink their carbon footprint - from running community vehicles on biodiesel, to refurbishing draughty farmhouses, testing solar heating systems, swapping tips for energy saving and growing vegetables in polytunnels.

John Hutchison will talk about the highs and lows of low-carbon living on Eigg, and the journey from the community buy-out of the island twelve years ago, to today’s green challenge.

This talk is hosted by the Lake District National Park Authority and Outdoor Studies at the University of Cumbria.

Please use public transport or car-share wherever possible.

Contact Traveline on 0871 200 22 33 for public transport information, or go to Liftshare to arrange a share.
