Networking to improve environmental practices and
services for businesses across Cumbria
The Forum is a business to business initiative where members will share best practice to improve their environmental performance. We intend to actively campaign for improvements in environmental services provision across the County – better recycling opportunities for small businesses, improved support for energy conservation measures and more efficient public transport links – these are just a few of the issues in our campaign strategy. We also intend to build stronger relations with local communities - supporting local social and environmental schemes.
Aims and Objectives
To foster and promote Cumbria as a Centre of Environmental Excellence by actively encouraging and supporting sustainable environmental best practice in the local business community.
What is a "Green" Business?
We refer to a "Green" business as one that contributes towards the reduction of the environmental impact of its product(s) and/or service(s) by applying some or all of the basic principles of sustainable design.
Sustainable design begins with looking at the environmental impact of a product, over its entire "lifespan."
This product lifespan begins with the resources used in production, which include not only the raw materials it is made from, but also any water and/or energy that is used in manufacturing or growing it (referred to as embodied resources.) The "lifespan" continues with the environmental impact of transportation, storage and/or processing, the use and operation of a product, and then concludes with the resources required to assimilate its wastes from disposal. Any pollution generated as a result of any of the life stages is also considered. The sustainability metric used to assess and measure the impact of the lifespan of products is called Life Cycle Analysis.
Why green up your business?
- There has never been a better time to stand back and look at what you do and how you do it!
More and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of being environmentally sensitive in business and offering a service or a product that is planet friendly. By offering such products or services you will show your customers and clients that you care about the environment, which could well be the deciding factor in you getting their business, instead of one of your competitors.
- If you want to feel really good just be greener than your competitors
What our green business associates say:
- We were always green in our private lives but by extending our green practices into our business platform has brought a new found fulfilment in doing business. What we did not foresee is that we had instant common ground with so many of our guests. An instant repartee, and a basis on which to establish long term and repeat business.
- We thought that going green would up our fixed costs when in fact its done the reverse!
